Rietvlei dam was built during the great depression and currently provides Pretoria with 15% of its water. The reserve covers an area of 3800 hectares and can support up to 2000 head of game. Rietvlei Dam offers a number of sporting facilities. Fishing is popular and the angling area includes toilet and braai facilities as well as camping and chalets for overnight guests. Fish caught in Rietvlei dam include catfish, yellowfish, carp and Tilapia. You can also enjoy the hiking trails or do bird watching from the beautiful bird hides. 40km of roads within the reserve make for a pleasant family outing. Game to be seen ranges from cheetah to rhino. Birdhides, toilets and braai facilities are available along the roads. Night drives are also a must for groups of more than 10 people. Firewood and blankets are supplied and visitors bring their own food to braai at the Fish Eagle Lapa.
