All over our beautiful city residents are jumping in, taking responsibility and changing things for the better. One such project is Die Moot Projek that encourages and enables residents to clean, repair and improve their area. Their approach is theoretically founded by the Broken Window Theory which was applied with great success in New York in the USA. In short, it means that if the small things are fixed and maintained first, the big improvements will automatically follow in time. The theory also assumes that tidy areas give an indication that the residents of the area care and are aware of what is going on around them and this in turn leads to reduced crime levels. Since July 2022 hundreds of residents have gotten involved and massive changes have been seen in the area. One of their projects was to clean and repurpose a small outbuilding on the corner of Terblanche and Codonia Avenues. They have painted a beautiful South African butterfly on its walls where people have a photo opportunity and have added a grid where you can put your name on a lock to pledge your support of our city and its amazing people.
