The majestic Voortrekker Monument is nestled in a nature reserve situated in Pretoria. It is a unique Grade 1 National Heritage Site that commemorates the Pioneer history of Southern Africa and the history of the Afrikaner. The monument was designed by architect Gerhard Moerdijk and inaugurated in 1949. Some of the most interesting features of this building include the world?s longest historical marble frieze, tapestries with more than three million stitches and a cenotaph. Every year on 16 December at 12h00, the sun shines through an opening in the roof on the words: 'Ons vir jou Suid-Afrika'. Climb 299 steps from the parking lot to the top of the monument to enjoy a spectacular view of Pretoria.
